European Principles of Haemophilia Care

Message from the President of EAHAD:

Dear Colleague

During the period 2005-7 the European Interdisciplinary Working Group (IDWG) met and developed a document setting out the principles behind the provision of  haemophilia care across Europe. This was published in Haemophilia 2008 Mar;14(2):361-74..*

About 45 established physicians from major haemophilia Centres in15 European counties, extending from Poland to Portugal, compiled the document during a series of 7 meetings which were supported by Baxter BioScience. With the completion of this document, along with one on a European Curriculum for Thrombosis and Haemostasis and the establishment of the European Haemophilia Safety Surveillance (EUHASS, access via links on the left) the IDWG had fulfilled the purposes for which it was established. The members of the IDWG wished to continue to meet and develop their European haemophilia activities and they established the European Association for Haemophilia and Allied Disorders.

Thank you to all of those who commented during the consultation process on this document. As all the responses received were in favour the Executive Committee, on behalf of the Association, agreed to endorse and adopt it. You will be pleased to learn that the patients’ European Haemophilia Consortium and the World Federation of Haemophilia have also endorsed our document. On 26th February the EHC and EAHAD presented it to MEPs at a specially convened and very successful meeting in Brussels.

Christopher A Ludlam
President

*Unfortunately the heading at the top of the Special Article is incorrect. The heading should read ‘Interdisciplinary Working Group (IDWG)’ as the paper is derived from this group’s activities as stated in the author list. An Erratum notice as been sent to the Journal.
